Most reseller eSIMs like Airalo or Holafly restrict tethering in their terms of service. Local Vietnamese carrier eSIMs – Viettel, Vinaphone, and Mobifone – have no such restrictions. Our plans at simvietnam.telebox.vn fully support personal hotspot, so you can share your data with a laptop or tablet without any carrier-level blocking.

Quick answer

Yes, you can tether your laptop using a local Vietnamese eSIM from Viettel, Vinaphone, or Mobifone. None of these carriers block personal hotspot functionality at the network level. The hotspot uses the same data allowance as your phone – there is no separate tethering bucket.

Keep in mind that tethering counts toward your daily data cap. For example, if your plan has a 5 GB per day limit (common on Viettel and Vinaphone), all hotspot traffic eats into that allowance. Once you hit the cap, your speed drops to roughly 128 kbps until midnight local time – enough for messaging but not for video streaming or large file uploads. In contrast, reseller eSIMs often prohibit tethering entirely in their terms; our local carrier eSIMs do not impose such restrictions.

How to enable hotspot

Setting up a personal hotspot is straightforward. On an iPhone, go to Settings → Personal Hotspot → Allow Others to Join. You can share via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. On Android, navigate to Settings → Network & internet → Hotspot & tethering → Wi-Fi hotspot. Make sure the eSIM profile is installed before you travel (use the QR code we provide). If you also have a home SIM installed, set the Vietnam eSIM as the primary data line in your device's cellular settings.

If the hotspot option is grayed out, you may need to enter the correct APN manually. For all three carriers the APN is simply "internet" (no username or password). On iPhone, go to Settings → Mobile Data → Mobile Data Network and type "internet" under APN. On Android, find APN settings under Mobile Network and add a new APN with name "Vietnam" and APN "internet".

Data limits and throttling

All our eSIM plans have a daily data cap. For example, the Viettel 7-day plan offers 5 GB per day, while the Mobifone 7-day plan gives 7 GB per day. Tethering uses data from this same daily allowance – there is no separate hotspot quota. Once you exceed the daily cap, speed is throttled to approximately 128 kbps for the remainder of the day.

The throttle resets at midnight local time (Vietnam time). During throttling, basic tasks like WhatsApp messaging, email, and light web browsing still work, but video calls (Zoom, FaceTime) and streaming will be very slow or unusable. There is no hidden "fair use" throttling beyond the published cap – the speed profile is as stated. If you need more daily data, consider our 15-day or 30-day plans with the same per-day allowance.

Speed & coverage

In major cities like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Nang, typical 4G/LTE speeds are sufficient for smooth video calls and file downloads via tethering. Speeds will vary by location and network load, but you can expect reliable connectivity for most remote work tasks. 5G is available in urban centers, though not all phones or laptops support 5G tethering; 4G is generally fast enough.

In rural areas such as Sapa, Phu Quoc, or Ha Giang, speeds may drop noticeably. Viettel typically offers the best rural coverage – the carrier itself publicly states over 99% population coverage. We have not conducted our own speed tests, so treat these as typical mobile internet conditions based on public coverage maps. For consistent tethering in remote regions, we recommend a Viettel plan.

Troubleshooting

If the hotspot option does not appear, first confirm the eSIM is active and data roaming is ON: go to Settings → Mobile Data and enable Data Roaming. Some Android manufacturers (Samsung, Xiaomi) include a per-carrier hotspot limit – check that no limit is set under the mobile network settings.

On iPhones using dual SIM (home line + Vietnam eSIM), the hotspot may stop working after a phone call. Temporarily disable cellular calls on the other line by going to Settings → Cellular → [Home SIM] → Turn off "Calls on Other Line". If tethering feels very slow, try switching the network mode from 5G to 4G/LTE; 5G can be unstable in some towers and may cause frequent disconnections.

FAQ

Does tethering use my daily data?

Yes, tethering counts toward the same daily data cap as your phone usage. There is no separate hotspot allowance. For example, a 5 GB daily plan means you can use that 5 GB across your phone and any tethered devices combined.

Can I tether after the cap (throttled)?

Yes, tethering still works after you hit the daily cap, but at a reduced speed of about 128 kbps. At that speed you can send texts and load simple web pages, but video calls, streaming, or large downloads will be impractical. The speed resets to full after midnight.

Is tethering blocked on any eSIMs?

Some reseller eSIMs (like Airalo or Holafly) explicitly prohibit tethering in their terms of service. Local carrier eSIMs from Viettel, Vinaphone, and Mobifone do not block tethering. Our plans at simvietnam.telebox.vn allow hotspot use without restrictions.

Will it work with iPhone + Windows laptop?

Yes, the hotspot works across all devices – iPhone + Windows laptop, Android + Mac, etc. As long as the laptop can connect to Wi‑Fi or Bluetooth, it will see the hotspot. The same data limits and speed conditions apply.

Do I need a VPN when tethering?

No, Vietnam does not block websites like Google, Facebook, or YouTube. You do not need a VPN for general internet access. If you rely on services that are geo‑blocked, you may want a VPN, but that is independent of the eSIM.
