Apple Watch Cellular in Vietnam: What Works in 2026

Apple Watch cellular does not currently work independently in Vietnam because no Vietnamese carrier offers Apple Watch cellular plans—neither standalone nor number-share. This means the watch cannot obtain its own cellular connection, regardless of which iPhone model you use or where you bought your watch.

The Apple Watch can still use cellular features when paired to an iPhone that has a local eSIM, but only by relaying data through the phone. If you want to leave your iPhone behind, your Apple Watch will be limited to Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth tethering to the paired iPhone, which only works within about 9 meters (30 feet). For full independence, you'll need to carry your iPhone.

Carriers like Viettel, Vinaphone, and Mobifone focus primarily on smartphone data plans and mobile broadband. Supporting Apple Watch cellular requires specific network infrastructure, backend agreements with Apple, and number‐sharing systems that these carriers have not yet implemented.

As of early 2026, none of the three major Vietnamese carriers have launched Apple Watch cellular plans. This situation is not unique to Vietnam—many countries around the world (e.g., most of Europe outside the UK, large parts of Asia) still lack carrier support for Apple Watch cellular. The simplest workaround is to buy a Vietnamese eSIM for your iPhone and keep the iPhone nearby. The Apple Watch will relay data through the paired iPhone, giving you access to messages, calls, maps, and other apps while you wear the watch—just like at home.

You can also use the iPhone's Personal Hotspot to let the watch connect via Wi‑Fi when the phone is left behind, though this is limited to a typical Bluetooth range of about 9 meters. Alternatively, just carry the iPhone with you—it’s not as free as a standalone watch, but it's the only reliable way to get full internet on the watch (e.g., for maps, messages) while traveling in Vietnam.
