Viettel 5GB vs 10GB/day: Enough for 4K Streaming?

Netflix recommends a 15 Mbps connection for 4K streaming, which the company states translates to about 7 GB of data per hour. YouTube’s 4K streams typically run between 10 and 20 Mbps, resulting in a range of roughly 6 to 9 GB per hour depending on compression and the specific video. These figures are based on the service providers’ own guidance and typical bitrates.

Actual consumption can vary. The resolution your device actually displays, buffering behavior, and the efficiency of video compression all influence data use. For example, a 4K stream on a smaller smartphone screen may use slightly less data than the same stream on a 65-inch TV because the phone’s display doesn’t require the full bitrate. Still, 7 GB/hour is a reliable rule of thumb when planning your daily data budget.

Our Viettel 5GB/day plan costs $10 for 7 days and $15 for 30 days. With 5 GB of high-speed data each day, you can stream about 40 minutes of 4K Netflix before hitting the cap. That calculation uses the 7 GB/hour estimate mentioned above, so actual time may vary slightly.

Typical everyday tasks eat far less data. Browsing maps, checking social media, and using messaging apps together consume roughly 1–2 GB per day. That leaves 3–4 GB for streaming and other heavy uses. If you are disciplined about when you stream, the 5 GB plan can work well for one person.

If you stream 4K content for under 30 minutes per day, 5 GB/day will comfortably cover your video needs along with normal navigation and messaging. Many travelers find that their hotel Wi-Fi handles most of their evening streaming, leaving the eSIM for daytime maps and quick social updates. In that scenario, 5 GB is plenty.

Another common situation is when you keep video quality at 1080p or lower. 1080p streams use roughly 3–4 GB per hour, so 5 GB/day can give you over an hour of high-definition streaming. If you are willing to drop to 720p, you can stretch that even further. For moderate users who do not prioritize 4K on mobile, 5 GB/day is a solid choice.

If you plan to watch 4K movies or series for an hour or more each day, 5 GB will run out quickly. One hour of 4K eats about 7 GB, which exceeds the daily cap. For heavy streamers, or if you share your connection with a travel companion, a larger daily allowance makes sense.

The easiest way to save data is to download your shows before your trip. Netflix and YouTube both allow downloading over Wi-Fi; you can then watch offline without using your eSIM. This can eliminate streaming data entirely for your favorite content.

Inside streaming apps, reduce the quality to 1080p or 720p. This can cut data usage by 40–60% compared to 4K. Also, switch Google Maps to offline mode by downloading areas over Wi-Fi — that alone can reduce map data consumption by up to 90%. Finally, keep an eye on your daily usage through iPhone Settings > Cellular or Android Settings > Data Usage to avoid surprises.

For most travelers who stream 4K content no more than about 30 minutes per day, the Viettel 5GB/day plan offers enough data at a low price. If 4K streaming is a priority or you plan to share your data between devices, the Mobifone 7GB/day plan provides valuable extra headroom.

The difference in cost is small — often just $2–3 more for the 7GB option. That premium acts as cheap insurance against the frustration of running out of data mid-day. Evaluate your typical watching habits, and if you are on the fence, opting for the larger plan gives you peace of mind without a big jump in price.
