Not every phone supports eSIM in Vietnam. Here's the definitive list for 2026 — sorted by brand — so you know before you buy. One important caveat: iPhones sold in China mainland, Hong Kong, and Macau lack eSIM hardware entirely, so those models cannot use a Vietnam eSIM no matter what.

1. Which Phones Can Use eSIM in Vietnam?

eSIM works on any phone with eSIM hardware and no carrier lock on the eSIM slot. The compatible list includes iPhone XS and newer (except China/HK/Macau variants), Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer (except a few carrier-locked US models), Google Pixel 3 and newer, and select models from OnePlus, Oppo, Xiaomi, Sony, and Huawei. If your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, it will work with a Vietnam eSIM from any local carrier — Viettel, Vinaphone, or Mobifone.

Carrier locking is the most common blocker. If your phone is SIM-locked to a home carrier (e.g., AT&T, Verizon, Docomo), the eSIM slot may also be locked. Unlocked phones — or phones sold in markets where eSIM is standard — work without issue. A Vietnam eSIM can also run alongside a physical nano-SIM from your home country, so you keep your number active for SMS and banking while using Vietnam data. There is no need to 'unlock for Vietnam' specifically; any unlocked eSIM phone works with any local eSIM carrier.

2. Apple iPhone Compatibility

All iPhone models from iPhone XS (2018) and later support eSIM, including iPhone 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, and SE (2nd and 3rd gen). This means nearly every recent iPhone can use a Vietnam eSIM — with one major exception. iPhones sold in China mainland, Hong Kong, and Macau do not have eSIM hardware; they use dual nano-SIM slots instead. This is a permanent hardware difference, not a software lock, so those models can never support eSIM.

Dual-SIM behavior on iPhones is straightforward: you can use one eSIM and one physical SIM at the same time (iPhone 13 and later also support two active eSIMs). As for carrier locks, iPhones sold globally generally have no eSIM-specific lock, but Japanese models may have a carrier lock on the eSIM as well. If your iPhone is unlocked (or you have it unlocked by your carrier), it will work with a Vietnam eSIM.

3. Samsung Galaxy Compatibility

Samsung Galaxy S20, S21, S22, S23, S24, S25 and all their Plus, Ultra, and FE variants support eSIM. The Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip series (Fold 2 and later, Flip 5G and later) also include eSIM support. On the Galaxy A series, only select models like the A54, A55, A73 and newer have eSIM — always check the model number before purchasing if you're looking at an A-series phone.

One important note for US buyers: carrier-locked Samsung phones from Verizon, AT&T, and others may have the eSIM functionality disabled by the carrier. Unlocked US models work fine. Samsung phones can use one eSIM and one physical SIM simultaneously, or two physical SIMs (region-dependent), giving you flexibility to keep your home SIM active while using a Vietnam eSIM for data.

4. Google Pixel & Other Android Phones

Google Pixel 3 and newer (including Pixel 3a, 4, 4a, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9) support eSIM — though the Pixel 3 and 3a may have eSIM blocked on some carrier variants (e.g., Verizon locked models). Unlocked Pixels work reliably with Vietnam eSIMs. For OnePlus, models from OnePlus 11 and newer (OnePlus 12, 12R, Open) support eSIM; older models like the 10 Pro and 9 Pro vary by region, so verify before buying.

Oppo phones such as the Find X5 and newer, Reno 10 and newer, and selected global models support eSIM. However, Chinese Oppo models often lack the eSIM chip. Xiaomi global models — Xiaomi 13, 13T, 14, 14T — support eSIM, but Chinese variants typically do not. Sony Xperia 1 IV, 1 V, 5 IV, and 5 V have eSIM; older models do not. For Huawei, most phones do not support eSIM due to US trade restrictions, but some global models (P40 Pro, Mate 40 Pro) may — always verify the exact model.

5. How to Check if Your Phone Supports eSIM

On an iPhone, go to Settings > General > About and look for 'Available SIMs' or 'eSIM'. If nothing appears, your phone does not support eSIM. On Samsung and most Android phones, open Settings > Connections > SIM card manager and see if an 'Add eSIM' option is visible. Alternatively, dial *#06# — if you see an EID number, your phone has eSIM capability.

If you cannot find an EID or 'Add eSIM' option, your phone likely lacks eSIM hardware (or it is disabled by the carrier). For Chinese/HK/Macau iPhones and many Chinese Android models, there is no EID because the eSIM chip is absent entirely. This check takes only a minute and is the most reliable way to confirm compatibility before buying a Vietnam eSIM.

6. What If Your Phone Is Not Listed?

Some newer models (e.g., 2025 devices) may not appear on this list yet. In that case, check the manufacturer's official eSIM support page for your exact model. If your phone is carrier-locked to a home provider, the eSIM slot may also be locked — contact your carrier to request an unlock. Note that even on locked phones, some carriers (like Japan's Rakuten) allow adding a second eSIM, but this is the exception rather than the rule.

We can help verify your phone's compatibility. Contact us at simvietnam.telebox.vn with your IMEI or model number before purchasing. When in doubt, choose a physical SIM option instead of eSIM for guaranteed compatibility — we offer both.

FAQ

Does my iPhone 14 from China work with Vietnam eSIM?

No, it does not. iPhones sold in China mainland, Hong Kong, and Macau do not have eSIM hardware — they use dual physical SIM slots instead. This applies to all iPhone models from XS onward. There is no way to enable eSIM on these devices; you would need to use a physical Vietnam SIM or a different phone.

Can I use Vietnam eSIM on my Samsung Galaxy and keep my home SIM active?

Yes. Most Samsung Galaxy phones that support eSIM allow dual-SIM use: one eSIM for your Vietnam data and one physical nano-SIM for your home number. You can receive SMS and calls on your home SIM while using data from the Vietnam eSIM. Just make sure your phone is unlocked and the eSIM is not disabled by the carrier.

What about Japanese docomo/au/SoftBank locked phones?

If your phone is carrier-locked to a Japanese provider (docomo, au, SoftBank), the eSIM slot may also be locked. Even if the phone has eSIM hardware, it may not accept a foreign eSIM profile until the device is unlocked by the carrier. Contact your Japanese carrier to request an unlock. Once unlocked, the phone will work with Vietnam eSIM.

Are there any phones that definitely do NOT work with Vietnam eSIM?

Yes: any phone that lacks eSIM hardware. This includes all iPhones from China mainland, Hong Kong, and Macau; most Huawei models (excluding some global variants); many Chinese Android phones (Oppo, Xiaomi, OnePlus) sold in China; and older phone models released before 2018. Additionally, carrier-locked phones where the eSIM slot is disabled will not work.

How do I install the eSIM on my phone?

After purchasing your Vietnam eSIM from our store, you will receive a QR code via email. Go to Settings > Cellular/Mobile Data > Add eSIM (or SIM Card Manager > Add eSIM on Android) and scan the QR code. Follow the on-screen instructions. Your eSIM will activate within minutes of scanning. Keep the QR code handy in case you need to reinstall it.
